Academic Research

My research focuses on race and gender representation in film, social media and popular culture. After being accepted, my research has been presented at the 46th and 47th Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Southeast Colloquiums.

In 2023, I was awarded the College of Communication and Fine Arts Outstanding Research Award-Masters at the University of Memphis President’s Honors Assembly and Leadership Awards.

  • Research Paper Presented to the Open Division of the 2022 AEJMC Southeast Colloquium

    Disney is one of the world’s most influential media corporations, with its lasting impact on society and its princesses as its most famed and prestigious characters. In December 2009, the company debuted its first Black female princess in an animated film in The Princess and the Frog. Celebration and expectancy followed however, many issues regarding the film’s portrayals were raised, especially surrounding race, gender and class. Using a textual analysis, this research examines the narrative and visuals in The Princess and the Frog (2009) and seeks to uncover the major media conglomerate’s representation of Black women.

  • Research Paper Presented to the Visual Communication Division of the 2021 AEJMC Southeast Colloquium

    Social media have become an accessible platform for engagement, education, politics, and communication with both friends and strangers. They are used as a way to protest and converse about societal issues, including racial injustice and police brutality. This research explores the meanings of memes about Breonna Taylor. Through this lens, the present study seeks to decode the memes about the case as typical of the types of memes in social media movements.
